Understanding Dialysis: A Complete Guide

Dialysis is a life-saving treatment for people whose kidneys are no longer able to function adequately. This comprehensive guide breaks down everything you need to know about dialysis in Ghana — from the medical facts to the human experience of living with this treatment.

What is Dialysis?

Dialysis is a medical procedure that performs many of the functions of healthy kidneys. When your kidneys fail, dialysis removes waste products and excess fluid from your blood. There are two main types: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Hemodialysis

In hemodialysis, your blood is pumped through a machine that filters out waste and excess fluid before returning clean blood to your body. This typically requires three sessions per week, each lasting about four hours.

Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of your abdomen (peritoneum) as a natural filter. A special fluid is introduced into the abdomen through a catheter, absorbing waste products before being drained.

The Cost Challenge in Ghana

One of the biggest challenges facing dialysis patients in Ghana is the cost. A single dialysis session can cost between GHS 500-1,500, and patients typically need three sessions per week. This puts life-saving treatment out of reach for many Ghanaians.

The Adomah Kidney Care Foundation works to bridge this gap by providing financial assistance for dialysis treatments.
